BC Poker Championships

Back for its second year, the highly anticipated BC Poker Championships were held at River Rock Casino & Resort; crowning the largest Canadian Poker Tour event of the year, this televised CPT event ran from November 20th – 26th and hosted 3 major events that made the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) proud.

The BC Poker Championships are highly anticipated from not only CPT players but those looking to find the largest prize pools in the country. BC Lotteries, and River Rock staff and crew work hard to meet the expectations of players from across the country and produce the largest prize pool to date from a Canadian venue. Of course, that excludes the World Poker Tour event, but considering that was an international tournament on Canadian soil, this showcased some of the best poker talent in Canada, without influence from many of the high-profile pros from down south.

With the first event, being a $1,000 Pot Limit Omaha that attracted 196 players, and the second a $1,000 Pot Limit Hold’em event that topped out at 434 players, things kept getting bigger with a Main Event that needed to be split into Day 1a and Day 1b. The next largest event was the 737-player super-satellite that was run for the Main Event – a super-satellite with 737 players.

The $2,500 No Limit Hold’em was not a sellout but as director, casino marketing for BC Lotteries, Holly Spence said, “A sellout would have been nice but we’re very happy with the results and the turnout.” With an estimated prize pool of $2.5 million for a sellout main event the BCLC was keen on keeping a round number and contributed $40,000 to the prize pool to make it a cool $2 million.

Daryl McCullough, Senior Manager, Poker Operations and Development for Great Canadian Casinos, focused on the week’s numbers. “This is a 60 percent increase from 2005,” he said. “We introduced Omaha 8 or better and had a great turnout for that as well.”

The most disconcerting factor of the whole week was enduring the 30cm or so of snow and freezing rain that continued to fall during the final days and froze the Southern Mainland with an uncharacteristic display of winter for BC. Between the delays at the airport in which many players were forced to stay extra days, the accidents and road conditions, it made for an awkward exit from River Rock. Even more painful was that in the meantime Ontario was enjoying double-digit temperatures.

Aaron Duczak came out on top in this specialty event that started the BCPC. Runners-up were a couple of CPT regulars – Colin Burton from Kelowna taking down second, and Jerry “Cash” Carter from Calgary capturing 3rd for his amazing 8th CPT final table over our 3 seasons. With the exception of Tri Huynh from Manitoba who finished 9th, Andrew Jackson from Alberta who pulled in 16th, Jeo Garrett – a Yank from Washington State in 11th and Scott Clements – another American resident who recently won the Canadian Open Championship at the Fallsview WPT event, the rest of the money finishers kept the cash in the province.

Gauging from the turnout for the Pot Limit O/8, there should be serious consideration to make this a regular event at the BCPC to inject some variety into the tournament schedule. It also made for a great lead-in for the Pot Limit Hold’em event held the next day.
